Stevenage is around half an hour from us, and we work across both sides of it, the New Town housing that makes up most of the borough, and the Old Town properties that predate it by centuries.

We take on extensions, kitchens and bathrooms and full renovations for homeowners here, and commercial refurbishment for businesses and landlords across the town's industrial and office space.

Stevenage has its own planning authority Stevenage Borough Council, not North Hertfordshire, which covers Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock nearby. Applications go to the borough directly.

Most of the town was built as England's first New Town from the late 1940s onward, and that shapes the building work. New Town housing tends to be generously spaced with decent-sized plots, which is why single-storey rear extensions here so often fall within permitted development. It also tends to share construction methods across whole streets, so once we've worked on one house in a neighbourhood, we usually know what we'll find in the next.

The Old Town is a different proposition entirely, with older stock and tighter controls on anything visible from the High Street.
