Bespoke Carpentry & Joinery Bedfordshire

Bespoke carpentry & structural joinery in Biggleswade and across Bedfordshire - fitted storage, staircases, doors, timber structures.

Carpentry & Joinery in Biggleswade and Across Bedfordshire

Carpentry is the trade that holds a building project together. The roof structure nobody sees and the staircase everybody touches are both carpenter's work, and the difference between average and excellent is obvious the moment you run your hand along it.

JLS Building & Property Development is a family-run building firm in Biggleswade with over 30 years in the trade, and carpentry has always been at the heart of what we do. We take on both structural carpentry within building projects and standalone bespoke joinery for homeowners across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Structural Carpentry

Roof Structures & Alterations

Cut roofs, dormers, flat roof joists and structural timber for extensions and loft conversions , built to structural engineers' specifications and signed off by building control.

Floor Joists & Stud Work

New floors, replacement of rotten or undersized joists discovered during renovations, and stud partitioning to reconfigure layouts.

Staircases

Made-to-measure staircases supplied and fitted, the make-or-break detail in every loft conversion and many full home renovations.

Bespoke & Finish Carpentry

  • Fitted wardrobes and alcove units: built into the awkward recesses either side of chimney    breasts where flat-pack never fits
  • Media walls and shelving: designed around your TV, books and life
  • Internal doors, architraves and skirting: hung and finished properly, including fire doors where regulations require
  • Kitchen carpentry: worktop fitting, larders, breakfast bars and panelling to complement a new kitchen installation
  • Window seats, under-stair storage and home office nooks: turning dead space into useful space
  • External timber work: porches, pergolas, decking and cladding

Why Use a Building Firm for Carpentry?

Standalone carpenters are often excellent, but the moment a job touches plaster, electrics or structure, you're back to juggling trades. Because our carpenters work alongside our own builders, electricians and decorators, a "simple" fitted wardrobe that needs a socket moved and the wall made good is still one job with one invoice. And for structural work, you get the comfort of an FMB-accredited, SafeContractor-approved firm with proper insurance behind every cut.

Local Carpentry Work

We handle carpentry across our whole coverage area, with a lot of work in the garden city streets of Letchworth, where Arts and Crafts era homes deserve joinery that respects their character, and for homeowners in Sandy from alcove units in older cottages to complete first-fix carpentry packages on renovation projects.

Materials & Finish: How We Build Fitted Furniture

The gap between flat-pack and bespoke comes down to two things: what the piece is made from, and how it's finished.

Carcasses and shelving are built from 18mm MR MDF or birch plywood depending on span and load, never the 12mm chipboard that sags under a row of hardbacks within a year. Long shelf runs get proper support or thicker board; we'd rather tell you a 1.2m floating shelf needs a different construction than build one that droops.

Doors and fronts are made to your style, shaker, flat slab, beaded or v-grooved to echo period panelling, and hung on soft-close hinges with proper adjustment, so gaps stay even after years of use.

Paint finish is where fitted furniture succeeds or fails visually. Our standard is a full spray or brush-finished system: primed, undercoated and topcoated in a durable satin or eggshell, with caulked junctions to walls and ceilings so the piece reads as architecture, not furniture pushed against a wall. Colour-matched to your walls or deliberately contrasted, your call, and we'll advise.

Internals are configured around what's actually going in them: hanging heights measured against your clothes, drawer boxes where drawers earn their cost, and lighting wired in where wardrobes are deep or halls are dark.

Every piece is measured on site after any plastering is done, because walls are never straight, floors are never level, and bespoke means built to the room you have, not the room the drawing assumed.
